I have started keeping track of my personal records. I have no idea if anyone else thinks this is useful. I think it’s kinda fun.
Number of Countries Visited: 23
- United States
- Puerto Rico
- The Bahamas
- Isle of Man
- United Kingdom
- Republic of Ireland
- The Netherlands
- South Korea
- Puerto Rico
Still haven’t been to a single country in Africa, nor have I been south of the equator at all.
It’s 21 countries if you don’t count the Isle of Man as a separate country (it’s a “Crown Dependency”) and Puerto Rico as a country (it is a US “territory”). And even though I can say I’ve visited “the United Kingdom” I haven’t visited Northern Ireland.
Fastest Speed: 190kph (118mph)
I got a rental car up to 190kph on a bit of autobahn between Dusseldorf and Eindhoven.
Coldest Temperature: -26ºC (-15ºF)
My trip to Tromsø, Norway set a few records, including lowest temperature I’ve experienced. Not only was I trying not to freeze, myself, but I was also trying to keep the batteries in my camera warm enough to work. It’s really hard to get good photos of the northern lights. This is about the best I could do with my camera.
Farthest North: 70ºTromsø, Norway
I actually took a trip to see the northern lights but we drove south that night. The farthest north I went in town was 69.65ºN.
Farthest South: 12.2º Curaçao
I went scuba diving in Curaçao in 1996 and that is as far south as I’ve gone. Having grown up closer to 36º N latitude, I remember how much quicker I got a sunburn. There are no photos of this, except on paper somewhere in a box.
Farthest East: 127º E: Seoul, S. Korea
I spent 2 nights in Seoul when speaking at a conference. The farthest east I went was the Gangam District of Seoul (of Gangnam Style fame).
To date, that’s also the only time I’ve delivered a speech with real-time translation. Most of my audience had headphones on to hear a translator speaking in Korean. I tried 2 jokes in that speech and one of them worked in translation. I can’t remember what it was.
Farthest West: 122.4º W: San Francisco
The farthest west I’ve been has been in the US. I’ve been to San Francisco about 4 times, at least twice for the security theatre waste of time and money they call RSA Conference. Kinda sad, but kinda typical that the Westfield Shopping Centre in San Francisco is where my furthest West photo is taken.
Deepest Depth: 40m (130ft) Scuba diving in the Bahamas
In the 1990s I took scuba diving classes and one of them was for the PADI Deep Diver certification. I don’t remember my exact depth, but I have a dive log somewhere. Safe to say it was about 40m, since that’s what’s required for the training dives.
The only underwater photo I have of that moment is here. Technology being what it was back in January 1992, you’ll have to take my word for it that it’s me in the photo.
Highest Height: 2,950 metres (9,678 ft) above sea level
I had a chance to ride the Seilbahn_Zugspitze near Lake Eibsee, Germany. That’s the highest point in Germany and probably the highest point (other than in an airplane) that I’ve been. It’s a really remarkable destination and one I highly recommend in both the summer and winter seasons.
Number of US states
This is a list of all the states I have been to. Some were literally just passing through. Others I’ve spent a lot of time in.
